Budapest is one of the most beautiful, dynamic cities travellers don’t know about. The Eastern European destination is one of the most interesting capitals on the continent. Budapest’s history is plain to see when exploring it. While Budapest and its people — especially the younger generations — have moved on from the Cold War and Communist rule, the city still struggles with its past. It is that past that allows for some tremendous tourist sites to be seen along with many of its pre-Communist sites.

How about visiting…

Buda Castle is located on the Buda side of the city. Visitors can walk around the entire castle complex with tours taking place inside. Near the castle is Matthias Church, a Roman Catholic cathedral built in the Romanesque style. The church has undergone extensive renovations in the last decade to bring it back to its past brilliance. Around the entire Buda Castle complex, visitors will find cafes, restaurants, and the occasional festival. In October, visitors should seek out the Palinka and Sausage Festival hosted next to the castle.

Must see…

Younger generations may be clueless about the terror citizens lived under during Budapest’s Communist period. That is why visiting the House of Terror is one of the most important places to see. Housed in the former offices of the secret police, visitors will learn all about the reign of terror citizens endured during Communism.

Don’t forget to…

Budapest has some of the best street food in Europe. Langos is one of the most popular street foods to eat and it can be found for pennies at stands around the capital. Langos is deep-fried dough topped with sour cream and grated cheese. Other items can be added including mashed potatoes and ham. It is seriously good food that will fill travellers up quickly.

Budapest

Beautiful yet struggling to overcome the past, that is Budapest in a nutshell. It is a city that provides visitors with excitement thanks to its nightlife and education due to the great historical sites. While many travellers go to the Czech Republic or Croatia for holidays, Budapest shouldn’t be overlooked for a weekend trip or extended break.
